I started listening on my train commute the last few weeks and have to say that you guys have really helped in my situation... I to have had my dream house foreclosed on and am on the rebound. My relationship with my wife, family , and friends have been put to the test and felt that all the pressure put me on the brink of darkness. I had no one to turn to except to listen to you guys. Mostly because I understood how you felt and could relate. The need to find balance in your life should take priority over everything else so good for you both for making the decision that you did. Put yourself first and everything else will fall into place. I will miss the podcast but look forward to any updates you give on the website. So nice to hear how others are working the Dave Ramsey System. Since I havnt listened long I am curious about your car debt. Are you upside down. My Husband and I have a Kia that we owe 9,000 dollars on more than its worth! We don't know what to do. My husband did not know the Dave Ramsey plan before we married and he kept tacking on debt to upgrade cars. Any advice you have learned or how you are handling your car debt. Would be great to hear !

I did that 3 years ago and it was a big hit. I am planning on getting more recipes together for Christmas this year. About 5 years ago, I put together a story idea jar for my nieces and nephews. I printed out story ideas and put them in a jar. Ideas such as telling about their first pet, about their grandparents, their favorite food and so on. I also included a spiral notebook and a pack of pens and pencils. All the kids loved the story jar.

First of all, great podcasts. I appreciate your viewpoint. We actually removed that blurb from the intro starting with Episode 51 (the first episode of 2011) because we don't want the donations to be all about our snowball. That being said, some of our listeners do enjoy donating to us to help our snowball because of the content we provide on our podcast, and we do put in a lot of time and effort to produce the show. So in all fairness, we do earn our donations. We will continue to do the show and provide the best content we can whether or not any of our listeners decide to donate and ultimately, we're paying off our snowball by working hard and being diligent. I hope that helps!

Hi Dave,<br

I started my snowball in Nov 2010 and am doing it on my own. I understand the need for donations for the podcast, but really, asking people to pay your debt is wrong. How about paying for the podcast with donations and DONATING the rest after the podcast bill is paid to your church or a charity.

I listened to your show up until you began opening it asking for donations to support your debt snowball. If you want to keep track of your money, write down every cent.
If you want to keep track of your weight, write down every single thing that you eat and the amount. EVERY BITE! As Weight Watchers says "no licking the spoon". Two pounds a week is possible but it takes discipline. You can download "The Nutrient Value of Some Common Foods" which should help you get an idea of what your intake is. You can find it here: http://dsp-psd.pwgsc.gc.ca/Collection/H58-28-1999E.pdf It your free gift from the Canadian government.
When you start writing your food down you will quickly see where you need the most help. For me it is snacks. If I have healthy things ready to go when I am hungry and impatient it helps keep the junk food out of my diet. I also really like Dr Phyl's "No fail environment". Don't have chips, soda, pastries etc in the house. They have no food value and put your calories up quickly. Think of junk food as "Compounding Debt calories" and run away from them!
Exercise is great but food choices are what will make you lose the weight.Enjoy the journey!

Congrats Spencer on the weight loss goal!<br

There's a form we discussed in FPU this summer and for the life of me, I can't remember the name of it. It's a form that lays out all of your irregular expenses and then breaks them up into 12 monthly "payments". So for us, for instance, we put away $70 per month for car repairs, oil, tires, etc. We put this "payment" into our savings account and keep track of it on our spreadsheet. Whenever a car repair comes up, we tap into that fund and subtract the amount we spend from our worksheet. We're still feeling out exactly how much to allocate for certain items, but so far it seems to be working pretty well. Hope that helps! :)Hi Toby,
Great suggestions! The crock pot is probably the one thing I don't utilize as much as I should. I've tried the weekend cooking thing but can't myself organized enough for it. But the crock pot... that one I'll have to start remembering when I do my meal planning each week. I do usually cook more when I make our meals, and we use the leftovers for our lunches the following day. I haven't tried making double in one night, but that's a really great idea - freezing the other portion would be helpful. Now you've got the gears in my brain turning! Thanks for these suggestions!

Hi John,<br

Are you cooking more than one meal at a time? When you make one meal, it is just as easy to make double and save it for the next night or freeze it for later. Pasta meals usually taste better the next day if you have a firm pasta like penné or lasagne.A slow cooker or crock pot is another easy way to have meals waiting when you arrive home. If you don't have one I recommend one with a 'keep warm' setting so it will switch to warm when it is done rather than keep cooking. Life is busy and if you are delayed coming home your dinner will not be overdone. If you are not a morning person you can put the ingredients all together in the crock pot liner in the evening, sit the entire contents in the fridge overnight then pull it out and turn it on in the morning before you leave for work. This is a great way to do soup, or stew. Add some bread when you get home and enjoy your family.Weekend cooking is another way to get a break on weekdays. If you involve your children in the menu planning and cooking you will be teaching them good skills and have a great family activity. Cooking was something our daughter loved to do and she is now a great cook and Mom. Boys who can cook make great dads.Anyway, this is just a little vote of confidence from Canada. You are doing a great job and we are cheering for you!

Hi Lisa,

I’m sorry to hear you are so tired with all you have to do. Within one week me and my wife both had car problems that required towing. We had to spend close to $500 on maintenance and repair last month. The one thing I have always had trouble with budgeting is how to handle items that are not monthly. For example we know at the beginning of a month we will need oil changes, tires, whatever. It seems odd to budget $100 for car maintenance when most months there is no money needed. Other examples are water bill that is quarterly, vet bills that are typically twice a year for check ups. What I have started to be better about is thinking of the budget one month at a time. So this month we budgeted a lot for the vet, but put nothing in the budget for car maintenance (knock on wood we no issues this month), clothing, and other items that will not be spent this month. All the money that is not being applied to those areas is moved to paying off our debt snowball or shifted toward the non monthly expenses.
How do you budget for expenses that do not get spent every month? Thanks,
John

Hi guys,

I feel your pain with the car repairs and thank you for your great podcast.<br

I have subscribed to your show so I dont miss out! :-)You mentioned on this show today how discouraging it is to hear people from Dave's Friday "I'm Debt Freee...." show and all of them make $75,000+ annually.
Hubby and are are DINKS (double income, no kids) and we do not make that much (close, but not that much) and are chiseling away at our debts. We hope to be debt free mid-next year. Right now, we are paying down hubby's car (less than $2,000 owed on it! We hope to pay it off by the end of the year!)One thing that really concerns me is the fact that you dont have insurance. This scares me!!! I got H1N1 last year - something that was not in my control, and it put me in the hospital (ICU for 7 days - self-induced coma for 5 days) for a total of 17 days. The tab was nearly $200,000 for my stay. Have you looked into zanderinsurance for this?
I would hate for something to happen to either of you to delay your debt-freedom.One question as a new listener. Did you consider bankruptcy? Thanks!Meg

I am a new listener and really like the show! I have subscribed to your show so I dont miss out! <img

I Hope you realize that your trials and tribulations that you and Spencer endured are now valuable lessons that young couples can hear and learn from. At one time your emotions were raw and it seemed that those times would never end. God is not only blessing you now but is continuing to write your story with exciting chapters yet to come. Great work guys.

My wife and I listened to the podcast recently and think it was one of your best. Actually, we're not looking for a dream job by any stretch of the imagination. We're just looking for something that is stable and provides a good income. After doing some searching online with the BBB among other sites, we determined that the job would not be a good fit for us. We spent many years making desperate decisions because we were in desperation mode, and we're unwilling to do it again. Spence is willing to take any job as long as it's legit. Hope that helps to shed some light on it all!

Hey Kristi,<br

I'm up to date with your podcasts now and have enjoyed listening to them. One question though.....is it not better to take a "decent" job that pays better and allows you a normal sleep schedule again vs. continuing to keep a newspaper route? Spence, you're not 12 anymore...get a REAL job, even if it's not your DREAM job.

After I found your podcast I went back and listened from the beginning. Continued luck with the job hunting Spencer, you'll get that perfect fit soon. Although I've not been through your situation personally, the wisdom you've gained will really help a lot of people. If you wrote it as a "what not to do" book, similar to what dave's books are about you'll probably reach a broader audience. I hope that makes sense.Have a great week!
